Developmental Evaluation

An Essential Lens for Innovation

Our Developmental Evaluation (DE) services help you be curious about what’s developing in real time, so you can navigate complexity and make data-informed decisions in context, towards your goals. DE is instrumental for organizations engaged in any innovative, adaptive challenges, because it aligns strategies, structures, processes, and systems with timely opportunities for learning. Through collective practice, a culture of trust and agility develops, helping teams navigate change and integrate innovative practices that enhance decision-making and maximize impact.

Why DE?

  • DE right-sizes risk by enabling data-informed decision making

  • Enhances dialogue and encourages critical thinking to ensure learning can

be integrated and solutions can be advanced,

  • Share learning with invested parties so they understand what is happening in

the initiative based on their interests.

Multi-Pronged Methodology

Using a combination of traditional evaluation tools (like polls, surveys, or interviews) and adapting tools from different modalities (like design thinking, or liberating structures), DE works in close relationship to the activities of the initiative as they emerge. A developmental evaluator makes feedback and data accessible in fast-paced environments, so learning can integrate in real time.

Developmental Evaluation for Complex Initiatives

  • When learning is integrated into org culture to support ongoing development and adaptation of internal structures and processes,

  • When you want to adapt effective principles from one context to another,

  • When you’re exploring innovative responses and real-time solutions in times of crisis,

  • When you are guiding pre-formative development of innovations with the potential for broad impact,

  • When system transformation is the end-goal, and an initiative is building a multi-level strategy across scales.

What Does a Developmental Evaluator Do?

A developmental evaluator works as an embedded member of your team, and adjusts their approach to the activities of the work as required, constantly toggling between the identification, implementation and assessment of evaluation methodology (i.e.: designing tools, testing small scale probes or experiments, tracking interventions and developments, and documenting learning), as well as acting as a critical friend to the process, creating opportunities to engage deeply and systematically (i.e.: to support framing and reframing key challenges and concepts, and raising questions) to surface learning and advance the process.

“Developmental Evaluation has given us space and opportunities to critically assess the work we do at the Lab, our relationships with communities, and our own mental models. It has helped us to reflect on emerging dynamics occurring within the complex and interconnected systems of our work, allowing us to move new and innovative ideas into action.”

-Yara Younis, Lab Manager Refugee Livelihood Lab, SFU RADIUS Social Innovation Hub

Organizational Design

Thriving Workplaces

The traditional policies, practices, and approaches to organizational design have remained largely unaltered for decades. They often don’t reflect our values, let alone be built to center them. Our values-based organizational design approach supports the transformation of HR, ensuring workplace policies, organizational structures and strategies, offerings, and practices are values-aligned, relevant, and responsive to the evolving needs of teams, organizations, and communities.

Juicy Challenges

  • Culture change

  • High turnover

  • Recruitment of key roles

  • Low employee engagement

  • Inability to adapt to change and uncertainty

  • Inconsistent decision making

  • Conflict and misalignment

  • Performance and productivity “issues”

Regenerative Futures

  • Values-based mindsets are nurtured

  • Organizational vision and strategies align

  • Knowledge is harvested from experience

  • Practices to encourage curiosity and innovation are embraced

  • Regenerative futures are cultivated

Reimagining What’s Possible

By focusing on identifying and unpacking key areas of your organizational design, including language, policies, offerings, and practices that can drive meaningful change, we calibrate the investment and energy of your teams to the potential for values-based impact within your organization. Rather than delivering a “full-service” solution, we guide you through the process, providing insights and support that enable your team to build their own capacity for this work as they experiment and adapt a key initiative in real time.

"How might leaders evolve their organizations to operate more in line with its values? The answers are at once embarrassingly obvious and devilishly perplexing. Katrina is an ideal guide for the work of untangling and re-weaving practice for a future where more people can thrive at work."

- Carolyn Davis, Director of Community Engagement, Momentum Calgary

Strategy & Planning

Setting You Up for Success

Resistance to change is often a reason traditional strategic plans fail. There isn’t always a precedent for where to start or what happens next, and even when there is, the plan may not be clearly communicated or activated due to a lack of alignment, capacity, or collaboration - or the persistence of internal silos.

Our services are tailored for organizations who want to reimagine their approach to strategic planning, by taking context, relevance, impact, and regenerative principles into consideration. We help you craft strategies that are data- informed and nimble in the face of change, while remaining impactful for the communities you serve.

Strategic Innovation

  • Impact-driven multi-year organizational planning processes

  • Approach strategies for start ups or entrepreneurial ventures

  • Early-stage design and development of change initiatives and system innovations

  • Community or network engagement processes

Commit to Curiosity

  • Examine what is possible, through the widest, most inclusive lens

  • Converge your focus in a way that is data-informed

  • Use rubric-guided decision making to determine your strategic approach and identify your priority developmental activities

  • Apply rigorous cycles of rapid feedback to test and learn during strategy activation

  • Create on-going opportunities to take stock and adapt forward toward goals to maximize meaningful impact

"Working with Katrina brought expansive ideation, joy, ease, and bigger-picture thinking to our work, and helped us to see possibility and ‘generative constraint’ opportunities in every obstacle and tension on our path. Embracing a curiosity mindset had a direct impact on the launch of our first cohort of amazingly diverse and talented entrepreneurs, as well as the market traction we gained in raising our first fund."

- Cordell Jacks, CEO & General Partner, Regenerative Capital Group

Team Coaching

Evolve Separately & Together

From a systems-thinking perspective, cultivating a high-performing team through coaching is a long-term commitment. When it follows the trajectory of the team’s work together, it can develop resilience from the embedded support for individual reflection and team dialogue. This invites the team to share insights and learning, and encourages new behaviours through cycles of practice development.

Our approach to team coaching enhances both individual and collective capacity, equipping your team to tackle ambitious initiatives and keep momentum during periods of uncertainty.

Elevate Results

There are many motivations for focusing on how you work together, including:
